Based on the chalk Merrow downs, our Downland course is a challenge and enjoyable in all seasons. We have invested heavily in the course in recent years meaning we seldom use temporary greens.

The oldest club in Surrey, we are sited on Merrow Downs – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The views are exceptional, from Guildford Cathedral to the Wembley Arch and Canary Wharf, with panoramic vistas of the Surrey Hills. If you have not yet experienced our attractive but challenging course where no two holes are the same, then what are you waiting for?

Established in 1886 and subsequently redesigned by J H Taylor in 1925, the course is situated on typical Surrey chalk downs, bordered by attractive woodlands. The rolling slopes provide an excellent example of the open commons on which the majority of inland courses were laid out when golf first became popular in England.

The par-69 course has been described as ‘Surrey’s hidden gem'. Don’t let the yardage of 6160 yards, relatively short in terms of championship golf courses, fool you. It is no walk-over, as was proven by a Pro-Am event where only one of the professional golfers was under par.

Some of our challenging par fours play much longer than they appear on the score card: the 1st, 6th, 10th, 14th and 17th for example, with uphill approaches to greens and the prevailing wind adding significant distance. One of the aspects of the course that members enjoy most is the variety in the course and that no two holes are the same, The par threes are a significant test. Whilst the 2nd is a friendly 126 yards, ideal for nearest the pin contests, make the most of it as the remaining four par 3s are a tougher proposition altogether. The 7th at 215 yards and the 13th at 200 yards have a distinctly "links-like” feel; whilst the 11th can be open to the elements, so golfers should be wary of wind direction and strength.

Two special holes are the 8th and 15th. The par five 8th at 555 yards plays shorter than its yardage, courtesy of being downhill and the views coming around the dog-leg are wonderful. The 15th or "crater hole” presents a daunting tee shot before golfers encounter lovely views of Woking and beyond from the fairway.
