The Cromwell course is a perfect combination of old and new, bringing together the best of both worlds. Starting and finishing within mature parkland, overlooking the Georgian Manor House, the course meanders up into the hills to overlook the surrounding Cotswold Hills.
Parts of the Cromwell course are set on the battlefields of Battle of Lansdown, the bloodiest battle in the English Civil War, hence the name of the courses. It is said the troops of King Charles sheltered in the grounds of the original house after the battle before they retreated under the cover of darkness.
The 6157 yard and par 71 course is an excellent combination of natural defences, water hazards and bunkers make some of the greens on this fantastic golf course a true challenge to find. Along with this you’ll need a steady hand to face the 12th tee shot over a lake to find the green on the popular par-3. With greens and tees built to USGA specifications, the Cromwell Course will no doubt become a firm favourite.
THE CROWN
The Crown course has been awarded the HSBC Gold Award and is considered one of the toughest tests of parkland golf in the South West, nestled in the heart of some of the most mature and unspoiled natural parkland.
The Crown is an easy walking course, which plays a lot harder than the 6201 yards and par 69 suggests. With fast running fairways and undulating greens the Crown Course is home to some unique holes that will require good precision and length in order to negotiate some of the more testing fairways.
The greens are smaller and being more tree lined strategy and accuracy are a must to play to your handicap on this course. The key to a good score is to get through the first 5 holes reasonably un-scathed, as it’s a tough start. If you can do that there are some good scoring opportunities later in the round but also some holes that can bite back if you get a little wayward.
